Zentrum für Integrative Psychiatrie (ZIP)

The clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy is a part of the Zentrum für Integrative Psychiatrie (ZIP) gGmbH. The ZIP gGmbH in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) at the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel. Holding 4 professorships, the ZIP gGmbH is a part of the medical faculty of UKSH.
The ZIP gGmbH has obligatory care for psychiatric and psychosomatic patients in both Kiel (Campus Kiel) and Lübeck (Campus Lübeck). The Campus Kiel contains the following departments: Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, Clinic of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Outpatient clinic, and the Institute for Sexual Medicine and Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
The Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy provides 40 beds for inpatients and 15 beds in a day hospital section. One of the main focuses of the clinic is the clinical care for children and adolescents with attention deficit-/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The research unit of the clinic has been investigating the mechanisms of defiant cognitive processes in children and adolescents with ADHD for more than ten years now. The affiliated psychophysiological laboratory is well equipped with all modern devices which are necessary to perform noninvasive brain stimulation. In that lab, for example, it has been shown that tDCS during sleep can improve memory consolidation as well as behavioral inhibition in young patients with ADHD (Munz et al., 2015, Prehn-Kristensen et al. 2014). The research unit has been funded by intramural, national, and international grant. Scientific ADHD research is conducted in collaborations with several clinics and institutes within the UKSH (e.g. the Institute for Medical Psychology and Sociology, Clinic for Neurology, Clinic for Neuroradiology, sleep laboratory of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) but also with national and international partners (e.g. the Otto-von-Guericke-Universityof Magdeburg, Eberhard-Karls-University of Tübingen, and the Kinderspital of Zürich, Switzerland).
